Hjemvendte soldater er flyttet ud i bl.a. Munkebjerg Skov, Frijsenborgskovene og Rold Skov.
Danske krigsveteraner har så svært ved at begå sig herhjemme, at flere melder sig helt ud af samfundet og flytter ud i større danske skove. Her bor de i bivuak, lever af bær, fanger dyr og holder sig på lang afstand af civilisationen, forklarer folk med kendskab til de hjemvendte soldater.
Thomas Furustubbe har været udsendt til Balkan fem gange i 1990'erne og har et tæt netværk til flere veteraner:
»Jeg ved med garanti, at der lige nu løber mindst tre veteraner rundt i skovene i Jylland. Og jeg har kendskab til yderligere et par stykker, som har boet i skoven. De er flygtet derud, fordi de ikke kan eksistere i en lejlighed.«
I kampberedskab Thomas Furustubbe advarer mod at opsøge dem:
»Deres kroppe er stadig i kampberedskab. Mange af veteranerne vil opfatte andre mennesker som indtrængen på deres område. De lever ligesom gamle Vietnam-veteraner i USA: De har endnu ikke sluppet krigen og føler sig ikke velkomne i samfundet.«
Yvonne Tønnesen fra Livlinen i Hærens Konstabel- og Korporalforening har kendskab til otte tidligere soldater, som er flyttet permanent i skoven. De bor bl.a. i Munkebjerg Skov ved Vejle, Frijsenborgskovene ved Hammel, Rold Skov i Himmerland og Marselisborg Skov ved Århus. Der er især tale om veteraner fra Balkan-krigen.

In Amsterdam, there appears to be less and less space and opportunity for informal and creative use of the city. The Gecekondu Summerhouse Hotel aims to show the potential of seemingly structured Dutch areas and therefore takes inspiration from Istanbul; where over one third of all housing is build in illegal urban setup. These areas often contain an incredible urban richness. Gecekundu, the Turkish name for shanty building, literally means ‘built over night’. The Hotel will live up to its temporary character: Its building stones are the archetypical nomadic bags, the so-called china bags (or ‘turkentassen’), filled with sand from the beach.

Den Hollandske arkitektgruppe DUS finder at det offentlige byrum giver mindre og mindre plads og muligheder for uformel og kreativ brug af byen. Deres hotel-projekt Gecekondu Summerhouse Hotel skal vise byens skjulte potentiale. Projektet henter inspiration fra Istanbul, hvor over en tredjedel af al bebygelse er illegal. DUS finder at disse områder indeholder en stor urban rigdom. Gecekundu er det tyrkiske navn for en simpel bygning der er bygget over natten. DUS's Gecekundu Hotel lever helt op til sit navn og bliver bygget af de såkaldte "kina-poser" fyldt med sand fra stranden.

High in a rocky tree-covered area between two busy highways, a minature Swedish summer cottage painted traditional red with white trim suddenly appeared. Of course, it didn’t actually appear, klisterpete and akay carried it up there. They built the red picket fence to surround the tiny grassy area. They hung the clothes line across the yard. They brought the promise of the swedish countryside everyone wants to escape to, right into the middle of the city. They took an unused, unappreciated space and made it a charming and peaceful place of wonder despite the traffic below, the train passing on its tracks behind, buildings stretching out farther behind those...
What if more people made the places they ARE the places they WANT TO BE? It’s not so hard."

Cabin of plastic bottles

A Serbian maths professor has celebrated his retirement by moving into a house he built himself entirely out of plastic bottles. It took five years and 13,500 bottles for Tomislav Radovanovic, from the central town of Kragujevac, to build the 60sq metre house.

He told the national news agency Tanjug that he hopes to enter the Guinness Book of Records and has already sent them an application. Only the foundation of the property is concrete, and all other parts of the house are made of plastic bottles that he had been collecting for years.

Even the kitchen furniture and windows are made of plastic bottles.

"Over the past month Folke Köbberling and Martin Kaltwasser have been building a giant amphitheatre out of junk. With the aid of volunteers and intrigued onlookers, the German duo have almost finished and the result is worth a visit. As a study in patchwork construction, it is a magical space of chambers fabricated by borrowers, and has a glory unmatched by any corporate office block. It helps that Kaltwasser is an architect, so the building is structurally sound and user-friendly. The two have been collaborating since 1998, creating amorphous forms out of trash that retain a childlike simplicity in spite of rigorous engineering. "

Dominating the skyline of Arkhangelsk, a city in Russia’s far north-west, it is believed to be the world’s tallest wooden house, soaring 13 floors to reach 144ft – about half the size of the tower of Big Ben.The house that Nikolai Sutyagin built is also crumbling, incomplete and under threat of demolition from city authorities determined to end the former convict’s eccentric 15-year project.When Sutyagin began work on his dacha in 1992, he claims he was only intending to build a two-storey house – larger than those of his neighbours to reflect his position as the city’s richest man, but certainly not a contender for the Guinness Book of Records.However, convinced by a trip to see wooden houses in Japan and Norway, he concluded that he had not used roof space efficiently enough and decided to keep building.”First I added three floors but then the house looked ungainly, like a mushroom,” he said. “So I added another and it still didn’t look right so I kept going. What you see today is a happy accident. “There were other motives too. Having grown up in a Soviet communal flat, Sutyagin said he felt lonely living by himself.Not only would his house make a perfect love nest for his molls it could also accommodate the 18 executives at his construction company.What is left of his fantasy is slowly decaying around him. Even so, it remains a remarkable architectural feat – especially given the fact that Sutyagin built much of it himself – that defies easy description. A whimsical jumble of planking, from a distance it bears a resemblance to a Japanese pagoda, but draw closer and it seems more like a mix between a Brobdignagian tree house and the lair of a wicked fairytale character.

Thoreau's hytte eksisterer ikke mere og på den oprindelige placering i skoven med udsigt over søen Walden er den oprindelige byggetomt markeret af en række granitpæle. Til gengæld er der rejst en kopi af den oprindelige hytte klods op af en parkeringsplads i bekvem afstand for turister.

Thoreau begyndte at planlægge sin lille hytte i marts måned for over 150 år siden. Skelettet kom op i maj måned. Og han var parat til at flytte ind den 4. juli. Hytten var indrettet med en seng, et bord , et smalt skrivebord med en lampe, og tre stole --- "one for solitude, two for friendship, three for society."
